On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 67% based on 237 reviews, with an average rating of 6/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Life is simply thrilling, well-acted, and filmed with enough potential to overcome the trap-in-space genre's overall inability to add new wrinkles." On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 54 out of 100, based on reviews from 44 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C+" on an A+ to F scale, [39] while PostTrack reported that only 48% of viewers gave the film a "definite recommendation".
Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal said of the film, "For all its fascinating stuff, weighty rumours, and zero-gravity floats on the International Space Station, life has become another form of aliens, albeit with horrifying horror and serious fun."
